How To Make Your Own Beer

May 1st, 2008

You can buy most of the things you will need to make your own beer at your local home brewery store.  The most basic items you will need are a large boiling (or brew) pot, a tablespoon, a measuring cup, a glass jar, a fermentor (a big plastic food grade tub works, but it must have a tight lid), an airlock, sanitizer (you can use a chemical sanitizer or bleach), yeast (liquid yeast works well), and hops of your choice.

Remembering to sanitize everything that touches your beer once it has been boiled is very important.  Keeping bacteria out of your brew will ensure your beer ends up tasting right.

There are three steps to making home brewed beer: brewing, fermenting and bottling.

For the brewing process you will activate your yeast and steep the hops you have selected, along with any malt for dark or spiced beers.  This will create wort.

Fermentation begins with removing any excess material using a sterilized strainer from your brew and aggressively pouring the liquid into the fermentor bucket.  Put the lid on and let it sit for about 2 weeks at room temperature to ferment.

Bottle your beer with clean, sterilized bottles.  All you need to do is pour the beer into the bottles and carbonate.  You can use carbonation tablets or a mixture of sugar and water to carbonate.  If you use the sugar method, you will need to cap the bottles and let them sit another two weeks to carbonate.  If you use carbonation tablets, just cap them and let them dissolve.

To brew your own beer you will need a large boiling (or brew) pot, a tablespoon, a measuring cup, a glass jar, a fermentor (a big plastic food grade tub works, but it must have a tight lid), an airlock and sanitizer (you can use a chemical sanitizer or bleach water).  You will also need yeast (liquid yeast works well) and hops of your choice (your local home brewery store can help you pick out the right kind for your brewing needs).

One of the most important things when brewing is sanitation.  You must sanitize everything that touches the beer after it has been boiled to keep bacteria out.  The only bacteria you want in your beer is the yeast you put in.

There are three basic steps to making your own beer:  brewing, fermenting and bottling.

During the brewing process you will activate your yeast and steep the hops that you have picked out along with any malt for spiced or dark beers, making wort.
You are now ready to move on to the fermentation process. When you have finished steeping your beer you will need to remove any excess particles using a sterilized strainer, and vigorously pour the end result into your fermentor bucket.  Tightly secure the lid and leave it for 2 weeks at room temperature.  Once your concoction is done fermenting it is time to bottle.

Make sure your bottles are clean and sanitized.  Pour your brew into the bottles.  There are several ways to carbonate, but two of the easiest are putting individual carbonation tablets into each bottle or using a sugar concoction in the fermentor bucket.  If you use carbonation tablets, you are done.  If you decide to use the sugar method, you will need to let the bottles sit for about 2 weeks to carbonate.

How To Brew Your Own Beer

To start brewing your own beer you will need yeast (liquid yeast works well), hops of your choice, a large boiling (or brew) pot, a tablespoon, a measuring cup, a glass jar, a fermentor (a big plastic food grade tub will work, but it must have a tight lid), an airlock and sanitizer (you can use a chemical sanitizer or bleach water).

Sanitation is key for brewing a good beer.  Anything that touches the brew after it has been boiled cannot have any kind of bacteria on it.

There are three basic steps to making your own beer: brewing, fermenting, and bottling.

The brewing process consists of activating the yeast and steeping the hops.

After you have finished steeping your beer you will begin the fermentation process.  You will need to pour the mixture through a sterilized strainer to remove excess particles into your fermentor bucket.  Secure the lid and leave it for 2 weeks at room temperature.

Once your concoction has fermented it will be time to bottle it.  Clean and sanitize your bottles.  Pour your beer into the bottles.  There are many ways to carbonate your beer, but two of the easiest are putting individual carbonation tablets into each bottle or using a sugar concoction in the fermentor bucket.  When using the sugar method you will need to cap the bottles and let them sit for about 2 weeks to carbonate, but if you use the carbonation tablets you will be done.
