The key to brewing a great dark beer lies in the malts and hops that you choose. You can usually find dark malts at your local home brewery store. To make your dark brew you will need a large boiling pot, a glass jar, a fermentor (a big plastic food grade tub works as long as it has a tight lid), an airlock, sanitizer (you can use a chemical sanitizer or bleach water), yeast (liquid yeast works well), dark malt, and hops according to your recipe.
Making sure everything is sanitized, you will start with brewing. During this phase you will activate the yeast and steep the hops and malts, creating wort. Once you have finished boiling for about 30 minutes depending upon the specific recipe, you are ready for fermentation.
Pour the liquid through a sterilized strainer, removing all excess hops and malts, into your fermentor bucket. Put the lid on and leave it for 2 weeks at room temperature. Once the yeast is finished doing its job, it is finally time to bottle.
Make sure, as with everything else, your bottles are clean and sanitized. Pour your brew into the bottles. There are several ways to carbonate, but there are two ways that stand out as the easiest: carbonation tablets in each individual bottle or a sugar concoction directly into the fermentor bucket. If using the sugar method, you will have to wait for about 2 weeks to carbonate.
