How To Make Ginger Beer

Ginger beer is a carbonated alcoholic beverage that was started in England in the mid 1700s. To make this drink all you need is sugar, distilled water, grated ginger, two lemons, a large boiling pot, and a grater of some sort.

Cut two lemons in half and squeeze the juice into a small bowl. Mix 4 cups of distilled water, 2 teaspoons of grated ginger (you can use a grater from any place that sells cooking equipment, or a special ginger grater), about 1 cup of Turbinado sugar, the juice from the lemons and the lemon rinds. Bring all of this to a boil. Boil for about 15 minutes and then remove from heat. Add 7 more cups of distilled water and let the mixture cool at room temperature.

Once your drink is cooled, pour it through a fine mesh strainer to remove any excess particles into a large pot. Then put the mixture into bottles or jars. Let them ferment for about 7-10 days in a place that is warm (about 70-75 degrees). The longer it ferments the less sugary it will be. Keep in mind the bottles could explode, so put them somewhere where that won’t be a problem.
